For those who are able to spend some extra time in Door County, we thought we’d provide you with some of our favorite places to check out and explore.
1. One of our top recommendations is of course, Cave Point County Park! If you’re able to make the drive, it will be well worth it for the views. It’s known for its underwater caves and wave-worn limestone cliffs. Look for the signs on Highway 57. It is just North of Whitefish Dunes State Park.
2. Which leads us to the next on our list, the Whitefish Dunes State Park. This is a great place to stop after Cave Point, as its just a short drive away. If you are looking for a place to relax and “beach it”, this is a great spot for it!
3. For the BEST blueberry pancakes and hash browns “To die for”, we recommend breakfast at the Old Post Office. However, any breakfast here is highly recommended! Just be sure to get there early or see about making a reservation.
4. Casey’s BBQ & Smokehouse restaurant. Their southern style BBQ menu is delicious and there are so many options…we know you wont leave unsatisfied! Along with the wonderful food, Kira’s other favorite part of the experience was the pig “Chopper” hanging out in front of the restaurant.
5. For all you wine lovers, there are several wineries throughout Door County. If you’re looking for a wine tasting and/or want to check out some of Door County’s fine market-fresh foods, here are a couple places we personally checked out: Lautenbach’s Orchard Country Winery and Door Peninsula Winery.
6. If you’re looking to see some goats, Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant is known to have them hanging out on the roof. For a while Kira believed this to be a myth because they were never outside to be seen. But then finally during their last trip, they were spotted! We have no idea how the food is here but if you like Swedish food, I’m sure its a great place to satisfy your craving. Best of luck in seeing the goats for yourself!
7. Door County is not only known for their cherries but for the fish boils as well! Chris particularly enjoys this for a meal and there are a few restaurants that feature these. Pelletier’s is one we tried and would recommend. Aside from the food, its a fun experience to watch the fish boil as you wait for your meal!
8. We highly recommend checking out some of the art galleries around Door County. The Francis Hardy Gallery is a favorite of ours mainly because of the building itself where couples and families paint their names or special dates on its exterior walls. The Blue Dolphin House is another gallery and gift shop we frequent during our trips here, as well as several others.
9. The little town of Fish Creek itself! This is the place to be for your roaming and shopping needs. Here you’ll find a variety of restaurants, cafe’s, markets, coffee and ice cream shops, plus several gift shops! Its overall a fun place to be and only about a 10 minute drive from the resort.
10. And finally…we can’t leave out The Landmark Resort! Every time we have made the trip up, we stay here. There is so much to do around the resort. From having access to the several amenities available, relaxing by one of the pools, to just admiring the view. We hope you are able to take some time during your trip to watch the sunset…they are absolutely beautiful!
